Solis Inverter Guide for Ireland: String vs Hybrid, Single- vs Three-Phase and Battery Voltage

Solis is not one interchangeable inverter range. Before comparing individual models, decide whether the project needs a string or hybrid inverter, confirm the property's supply phase, identify the required nominal AC output and, for a storage system, establish the correct battery voltage class.

Scope of this guide This is a family-level buying guide, not an electrical design or a battery compatibility table. The exact inverter model, Irish connection route, battery pairing and backup arrangement must still be checked for the individual project. Product titles are useful labels, but the model or SKU on the product record and manufacturer documentation should be treated as the identifying detail.

A practical order for making the choice

Use this sequence to narrow the options without treating every Solis product as interchangeable:

  1. Decide whether battery storage is part of the project. A grid-tied string family such as S6-GR1P is the relevant starting point for a solar PV system without a battery requirement. A hybrid family is the starting point when battery storage is required, but the exact battery pairing still needs its own confirmation.
  2. Check whether the property and proposed design are single-phase or three-phase. The phase named in an inverter family is not a preference that can be selected independently of the site and connection.
  3. Confirm the exact output and Irish connection route. A model being sold in Ireland does not, by itself, make it suitable for every property or connection process.
  4. For a hybrid system, confirm low-voltage or high-voltage battery class. Voltage class narrows the search, but it does not prove that a named battery and inverter are compatible.
  5. Use the full model code. Shortened titles can hide important distinctions between an older RHI family, an S6 string model and an S6 hybrid model.

String versus hybrid Solis inverters

The official S6-GR1P(2.5-6)K range is a single-phase grid-tied family. It is the string-inverter family in this comparison, rather than a battery-storage family. The Solarboss 5kW example is labelled by the exact SKU S6-GR1P5K-DC, even though its older product handle includes "5G". See the Solis S6-GR1P 5kW string inverter.

Solis also has single-phase hybrid families designed for projects that include battery storage. The RHI-(3-6)K-48ES-5G family includes 3, 3.6, 4.6, 5 and 6kW models; the current Solarboss example is the RHI-5K-48ES-5G 5kW hybrid.

The S6-EH1P(3-10)K-L-PLUS family is a single-phase, low-voltage hybrid range with two MPPTs and a manufacturer-stated 40-60V battery range. Current Solarboss examples with matching model details are the S6-EH1P5K-L-PLUS 5kW hybrid and the S6-EH1P10K-L-PLUS 10kW hybrid.

"Hybrid" does not automatically mean whole-home backup. The circuits supported during an outage and the behaviour of the system depend on the exact inverter, battery, switching arrangement and site-specific design.

How to read the model names

The model code is a safer comparison key than a shortened shop title:

  • S6-GR1P5K identifies an S6 single-phase grid-tied model in the GR1P family.
  • RHI-5K-48ES-5G identifies the 5kW example in the RHI-5G hybrid family.
  • S6-EH1P5K-L-PLUS and S6-EH1P10K-L-PLUS identify 5kW and 10kW models in the single-phase low-voltage S6-EH1P-L-PLUS hybrid family.
  • S6-EH3P-H-EU is Solis's three-phase high-voltage hybrid family. This guide does not link a current Solarboss example; confirm the exact model and current manufacturer documentation before ordering.

Do not assume that "5G" and "S6" mean the same generation, or that two products with the same kW figure use the same battery class. If the model on a quotation, product page and manufacturer document does not match exactly, pause the comparison until it is resolved.

This table compares families; it does not approve any inverter-and-battery pairing. Solis's global battery list says compatibility varies by market and should be confirmed with the local Solis technical team. A matching voltage label alone is not enough.

Single-phase, three-phase and the Irish connection route

Ireland's NC6 microgeneration process covers maximum export of up to 6kVA on single-phase supplies or 11kVA on three-phase supplies. ESB Networks describes mini-generation above those limits, up to 17kVA single-phase or 50kVA three-phase, under the NC7 process.

That distinction matters when considering larger models. Do not infer NC6 eligibility from a 10kW model name: NC6 is governed by the unit's certified electrical data and maximum export, not the marketing name alone. The registered contractor and ESB Networks process must determine the correct connection route and permissible export arrangement for the actual project.

ESB Networks says the installation must be completed by a Registered Electrical Contractor. Its microgeneration requirements also call for an inverter compliant with I.S. EN 50549-1 using current Irish settings and a type-test certificate with the application.

Low-voltage and high-voltage batteries

Low voltage and high voltage describe different electrical classes; they are not interchangeable marketing labels. The S6-EH1P-L-PLUS family in this guide is a low-voltage range, while the official S6-EH3P-H-EU family is a three-phase high-voltage range.

The next check is more specific than voltage: the exact inverter model, exact battery model, applicable country or market, and the manufacturer's current compatibility record must agree. This guide does not name an inverter-and-battery pairing because Solis says compatibility varies by market. Confirm the exact pairing for Ireland with Solis and the independent installer before ordering.

Checklist before ordering

Ask the person designing and certifying the system to record:

  • the property's actual supply phase;
  • the complete inverter model, not only its kW rating or shop title;
  • the intended NC6, NC7 or other ESB Networks connection route;
  • the applicable inverter certification and required Irish protection settings;
  • the exact battery model and the dated, market-applicable compatibility source;
  • which circuits, if any, the proposed backup arrangement is designed to support;
  • who is responsible for design, installation, commissioning and the installation warranty.
