Why Your Solis Battery Is Not Charging or Discharging When Expected
If your Solis battery is not charging or discharging when you think it should, the cause is often a visible setting (mode, time schedule, reserve) or a system limitation that changes what is achievable in practice. This guide keeps you within a safe homeowner boundary: observe what the system is doing, record the key settings and messages, and escalate with good evidence. Do not change protection settings, grid code settings, firmware, battery parameters, or any battery communications wiring (CAN/DIP/RS485).
Before you start: confirm what you have (and stop if unsure)
This guide is written for the Solis S6-EH1P(3–8)K-L-PLUS European range (including the S6-EH1P5K-L-PLUS). If you are not sure your inverter is in this family, do not follow menu steps—capture photos of the inverter model label and the current front-panel screen, then contact your installer or Solis support.
Official documentation can help you verify your model family and terminology: see the Solis S6-EH1P(3–8)K-L-PLUS User Manual and the Solis support article on battery not charging/discharging when expected.
Safety boundary (do not cross)
- Do not open the inverter, battery, isolators, or any electrical enclosure.
- Do not change protection settings, grid code settings, firmware, or battery parameters.
- Do not change or reseat battery communication wiring (CAN/DIP/RS485) or any terminals.
- Stop and contact a qualified installer/electrician if you see repeated alarms, the system behaves erratically, or you are uncertain which settings are safe to view.
Step 1: Check the selected Storage Mode (observe only)
On the S6-EH1P(3–8)K-L-PLUS, commissioning includes selecting a Storage Mode (Manual Step 3). In that same area, the inverter shows related items such as Battery reserve and (depending on configuration) Time of use settings (Manual Step 4).
What to do now:
- From the inverter interface, navigate to the screen/menu area that shows Storage Mode and the battery-related settings list (do not change anything).
- Write down (or photograph) the currently selected Storage Mode and any visible battery schedule/reserve items.
- If you cannot locate these screens or the interface looks different from the S6 manual, stop and escalate (you may have a different model family).
Step 2: Check Time of Use schedules (is charging/discharging actually enabled?)
In the S6-EH1P(3–8)K-L-PLUS manual, Time of Use is described as manual control of battery charging/discharging. When the time is between a defined Start and Stop, the system charges or discharges according to the set current until a set “SOC/voltage” threshold is reached. The manual also indicates you can enable or disable each charge/discharge period via a selection box.
Homeowner checks (no changes):
- Confirm whether a charge period is enabled and what its Start/Stop times are.
- Confirm whether a discharge period is enabled and what its Start/Stop times are.
- Confirm whether the current time falls inside or outside any enabled periods.
- Take clear photos of the Time of Use screen(s) showing the enabled/disabled state and the configured windows.
If your expectation is “it should charge now”, but the current time is outside an enabled charge window, the behaviour may be explained by the schedule configuration—capture evidence and discuss with your installer rather than changing settings yourself.
Step 3: Check Battery Reserve (a common reason it won’t discharge)
The S6 manual describes Battery reserve as a settable SOC range (5–95%, default 80%). It also states: when battery SOC is less than the battery reserve SOC, the battery will stop discharging.
Homeowner checks (no changes):
- Note the current Battery reserve value shown on the inverter.
- Note the current battery SOC shown (if available on your screen/app).
- If SOC is at or below the reserve threshold, record that. This can explain why the battery is not discharging into the home load.
Do not change the reserve yourself if you are unsure. Instead, provide your installer with screenshots/photos and your desired outcome (for example, “discharge more in the evening” or “keep more for backup”).
Step 4: If it’s not reaching the set current, note that the inverter may be limiting it
The manual notes that the set current value is the maximum current for charging/discharging, but the actual current may not reach that value due to other factors such as maximum charging/discharging power limitation of the inverter and battery BMS limitation.
What to capture:
- A photo of the configured charge/discharge current values (if shown).
- A photo of the live power/flow screen showing the actual battery charge/discharge rate at the time you noticed the issue.
- Time and date, plus what else was happening (high household load, low PV generation, etc.).
These notes help your installer determine whether the behaviour is expected limitation versus a fault.
Step 5: Check alarms and message logs (do not clear anything)
Solis provides support resources for Alarm/Error Messages and for How to Check the Alarm Message Log within its support library. If your battery is not charging/discharging as expected, the fastest path to resolution is often to capture the exact alarm text/code and the time it occurred, then share it with support or your installer.
Homeowner checks:
- Look for any alarm or warning indicator on the inverter display.
- Photograph any current alarms and any relevant log entries you can view.
- Do not attempt to change configurations in response to an alarm—escalate with evidence.
If you need a starting point for official troubleshooting context, use the Solis support article: Battery not charging or discharging when expected.
Step 6: When to escalate (and what to send)
Escalate to your installer, a qualified electrician, or Solis support if any of the following apply:
- You cannot confirm the inverter model family as S6-EH1P(3–8)K-L-PLUS.
- Your Time of Use windows and Battery Reserve do not match your intended behaviour, but you are not confident adjusting them safely.
- You see alarms or repeated warnings, or the battery behaviour changes suddenly without any schedule change.
- The battery charge/discharge current is consistently below the set maximum and you need an explanation (inverter/battery BMS limitations may apply).
Send this evidence pack:
- Photo of the inverter model label.
- Screenshots/photos of Storage Mode, Time of Use charge/discharge windows (enabled/disabled and times), and Battery Reserve setting.
- Photos of any alarms and the alarm/message log entries you can access.
- A short timeline: when you expected charge/discharge and what you observed.
