GoodWe Offline in SEMS+: Is the Solar System Still Generating?
Scope: This guide is for a current GoodWe ESA 3-10 kW system using the
WiFi/LAN Kit-20and SEMS+. It explains safe observation of the app, router and external indicator lights. It does not prove electrical output or authorise covers, wiring, voltage tests, inverter restarts, factory resets, firmware or commissioned-setting changes. OlderGW5048-ESAsystems and other dongles need their own manuals.
The direct answer
Yes, a GoodWe ESA system can still be generating when SEMS+ says it is offline. “Offline” tells you that current monitoring data is not reaching the app; on its own, it does not prove that the inverter has stopped converting solar energy.
Check the inverter's external operation indication, the WiFi/LAN Kit-20 lights and your home internet together.
A normal green operation indication with no red system-fault light, combined with a two-blink or four-blink dongle pattern, points towards a monitoring connection problem. A red flashing system indication, an inverter operation indication that is genuinely off, visible damage or an electrical concern needs installer attention.
External lights are evidence, not an electrical-output test. A qualified installer must confirm actual output or investigate a safety concern.
What “offline” actually describes
For remote monitoring, information has to travel through a chain:
ESA inverter/system → smart dongle → home router → internet/GoodWe server → SEMS+ app
GoodWe says the dongle uploads operating information to the monitoring platform. A break after the inverter, such as old Wi-Fi credentials, can therefore make SEMS+ offline while the inverter continues operating. However, offline status can coincide with a genuine fault, so read both system and dongle indicators.
Safe checks in order
1. Record what SEMS+ is showing
Open the existing power station in SEMS+ and note:
- the exact offline wording;
- the last update time shown;
- which device is marked offline;
- whether an alarm is displayed; and
- when you first noticed the issue.
Take a screenshot after obscuring names, serial numbers, addresses, QR codes and account details. Do not create a duplicate station or remove and re-add equipment as a first response.
GoodWe's current manual says system faults and alarms can be viewed in SEMS+ under the power station's alarm area. If an alarm is present, record its name, time and details rather than clearing it or changing a setting.
2. Check the inverter's operation indication
Observe the front of the inverter from a normal standing position. On the current ESA platform, the operation indicator meanings include:
- Green: the inverter is operating normally in grid-tied or off-grid mode.
- Red flashing: system fault.
- Off: inverter powered off.
The large decorative breathing light can be configured in SEMS+ to turn off, remain on or display for a limited time. Its absence alone therefore does not prove the inverter has stopped. Use the defined operation indicator rather than judging only by the halo effect.
Green operation with no red fault is useful evidence that the inverter is operating, but not a measurement of generation, export or battery power.
If it is red flashing, stop the network-only checks and contact the installer with the fault evidence. If the operation indicator is off, do not open equipment or operate unfamiliar isolators. Ask the installer to establish why the unit is powered off.
3. Read the smart dongle lights
The current GoodWe ESA manual gives the following meanings for the WiFi/LAN Kit-20:
Power light
- Steady: the smart communication stick is powered.
- Off: it is not powered.
Communication light
- Steady: communication is normal in Wi-Fi or LAN mode.
- Single blink: Bluetooth is enabled and waiting for an app connection.
- Two blinks: the dongle is not connected to the router.
- Four blinks: it is communicating with the router but is not connected to the server.
- Six blinks: it is identifying connected devices.
- Off: it is resetting or not powered.
Watch the repeating pattern rather than counting a random burst. A short phone video is often more useful to support than “the light looked blue”.
Two blinks identify the router side of the connection as the immediate problem. Four blinks show that the router link exists but the server connection does not. Neither pattern, by itself, says the inverter has stopped generating.
If the dongle power light is off, do not unplug or reseat it. The communication hardware is connected to electrical equipment and should be checked by the installer.
4. Check the home internet
Use a phone or laptop on the same network to confirm ordinary websites load. If broadband works, check whether the router, Wi-Fi name, password or router location recently changed.
The GoodWe WiFi/LAN Kit-20 specification lists 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. Confirm the router still provides a compatible 2.4 GHz network. A weak signal can also prevent a stable connection; GoodWe's troubleshooting guidance suggests placing the router closer or using a repeater.
You may restart the home router using its ordinary user controls. Do not restart the inverter, battery or smart dongle as part of this check.
5. Refresh SEMS+ safely
Use the official, current SEMS+ app and the account with access to the correct station. Reopen the app and check current status. Menus vary by app version, role and device, so do not rebuild the station because a menu is missing.
If the dongle light becomes steady and new current readings appear, remote monitoring has returned. If it remains offline, retain the timestamps and light-pattern evidence for the installer.
6. Reconnect Wi-Fi only when the cause is clear
If the router name or password changed and the dongle shows two blinks, it likely still has the old network details. The cross-link should only be added after both guides have live, verified URLs.
For the WiFi/LAN Kit-20, GoodWe documents local Bluetooth access through Service > Local Access. Change only network details.
Do not hold the dongle's Reload button. GoodWe states that a long hold can restore factory settings, including passwords and network information. Do not change the safety code, grid code, working mode, export limit, battery parameters or firmware to solve an offline-monitoring message.
Does a green light prove how much solar is being generated?
No. Green supports normal operation but gives no verified power figure. An electricity-meter display can also change with appliances, battery charging and weather, so it is not a complete diagnosis. Do not open meter cabinets or measure voltage. If exact performance matters, ask the installer to verify output and retrieve device logs.
Stop and call the installer when
Contact Solarboss or the installer promptly when:
- the inverter's system indication is red flashing;
- the inverter operation indication is off and you do not have a known explanation;
- the dongle power light is off;
- any enclosure, cable or connector looks damaged;
- you can see copper or another conductor;
- there is unusual heat, smell, noise or water ingress;
- a breaker repeatedly trips;
- the app reports an alarm as well as offline status;
- monitoring remains offline after the router is working and safe credential checks are complete;
- the model or dongle is not the current ESA/
WiFi/LAN Kit-20covered here; or - anybody suggests opening equipment, measuring live voltage or changing grid/protection settings.
GoodWe's manual says electrical installation, maintenance and troubleshooting beyond normal observation should be performed by trained or qualified personnel. It specifically warns against unauthorised dismantling.
Information to collect for support
Send one clear support message containing:
- inverter model and serial number;
- battery model code, without guessing G20 or G21;
- dongle model, if externally visible;
- SEMS+ app version and phone type;
- the station's last update time;
- screenshot of the offline status and any alarm, with private data obscured;
- inverter operation-indicator colour/state;
- dongle power-light state and repeating communication-light count;
- whether normal home internet is working;
- any recent router, network-name or password change;
- when the problem started and whether it is intermittent; and
- photographs or video of external indicators and the installation environment.
GoodWe also asks for software version, installation time, fault occurrence time/frequency and relevant environment or grid conditions where available. Never send account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, local-access passwords or verification codes.

Frequently asked questions
Does offline mean backup power is unavailable?
Not by itself. Monitoring connectivity and backup operation are different functions, but a wider system fault can affect both. Do not assume backup readiness from app status; use the system indicators and ask the installer if backup availability is important.
Should I restart the inverter?
No, not as a routine homeowner response to SEMS+ offline status. Restart the home router if appropriate, but use an installer-approved shutdown/start-up procedure for the electrical system.
What do two and four dongle blinks mean?
Two blinks mean the dongle is not connected to the router. Four mean it is connected to the router but not to the server. Record the repeating pattern before contacting support.
Will missing graph data appear later?
This guide does not promise that an offline period will backfill. Keep the outage timing and ask support if historical data is important.
