How to Read Dyness PowerDepot G2 LED Status and Check the Battery in the Dyness App

Scope: This guide is for the Dyness PowerDepot G2. Solarboss may describe the product as PowerDepot H5B G2, so confirm the cabinet label. This is an observation guide for the closed battery and an already commissioned Dyness user-monitoring account. App layouts change; this article does not publish credentials or assume menu names. Do not open the cabinet, change DIP switches, unplug cables, alter settings or update firmware.

The PowerDepot G2 front light uses colour and animation to show broad battery state:

  • Green SOC animation increasing towards full: charging.
  • Green SOC animation decreasing: discharging.
  • Green flashing at the current SOC: standby.

  • Red steady: system protection.

Understanding the green LED patterns

The green display communicates both approximate state of charge and direction of energy flow. Dyness illustrates the charging pattern as the current SOC rising towards 100% and cycling, and the discharging pattern as dropping from the current SOC towards zero and cycling. In standby, the green indication at the current SOC flashes.

Watch one full cycle before deciding what you see. A still photograph can make a moving pattern look fixed, so take a short video. The display is a broad status indicator, not a precision energy meter.

Green flashing does not automatically mean a fault

The manual defines green flashing at the current SOC as standby. The battery may be waiting because the home has little demand, solar generation is being used directly, the battery has reached a configured reserve, or the inverter's schedule does not currently request charge or discharge. Those possible system behaviours depend on the inverter configuration; the LED alone cannot identify which one applies.

If the system otherwise behaves normally, record the app status. Do not alter reserve SOC, time-of-use rules or charge settings simply to force the animation.

What yellow and red mean

Yellow flashing

Dyness defines yellow flashing as a communication failure. It may indicate communication between parallel batteries, or communication between the lamp board and the battery-management system. A separate section of the manual says a flashing yellow master-battery light indicates abnormal communication between PowerDepot G2 units.

Your safe response is to record the pattern and compare it with any inverter or monitoring alert. Do not remove or reseat the communication leads. Network-style plugs in an energy-storage system can use manufacturer-specific pinouts and are not ordinary Ethernet connections. DIP mode and inverter protocol are commissioning settings.

Red steady

A steady red light means the battery is in protection. Dyness lists protection categories including charge/discharge over-current, high temperature and over-discharge. Some are accompanied by the buzzer. The colour does not reveal the exact category.

Stop changing household conditions long enough to capture the evidence. If the red light persists or returns, call the installer. Do not repeatedly press reset or attempt to force a charge.

How to check the battery in Dyness monitoring

The PowerDepot G2 manual identifies its Wi-Fi function as monitoring and optimising the battery system, and the official product page links to Dyness real-time user monitoring. The manufacturer manual does not lock this model to one permanent app-screen layout. Depending on commissioning, you may use a Dyness app or user web portal.

Use this screen-neutral process:

  1. Open the official Dyness user view supplied at handover. Use your normal saved route or the user-monitoring link from Dyness's official site. Do not install an app from an advert or share a one-time code with an unsolicited caller.
  2. Sign in to your existing account. If your plant is missing, contact the installer who commissioned it. Do not create duplicate plants or attempt installer registration.
  3. Select the correct home or plant. Confirm the site name and, where shown, the battery/device model or serial number.
  4. Record the reported SOC. Take a screenshot that includes the timestamp or last-update time if displayed.
  5. Record status and alarms. Capture the exact wording and code. Do not paraphrase “BMS communication lost” as “battery dead”, for example.
  6. Check whether the data is current. If the last update is old, the app cannot confirm the battery's present SOC or state. Pair the screenshot with a video of the live front light.
  7. Leave controls unchanged. Do not use remote configuration, firmware or optimisation functions unless your installer directs the action for this exact system.

If a field is absent, do not hunt through installer menus. Send what is visible.

A practical light-and-app comparison

Green charging animation and rising SOC

These observations agree: the battery is reporting charge activity. If the SOC does not rise over a reasonable observation period, save the times and screenshots rather than changing parameters. Solar availability, household consumption and inverter limits all affect net charging.

Green discharging animation and falling SOC

These observations agree with discharge. If the home is importing from the grid at the same time, the inverter schedule, reserve SOC, power limit or measurement arrangement may need review; the battery LED alone does not diagnose it.

Green standby with a current app value

Standby can be normal. Note the reserve SOC or operating mode only if it is already visible in the normal homeowner view. Do not modify it as a test.

Yellow light and stale/offline data

This combination supports a communication problem. Capture both, plus the inverter's battery status. The installer can then separate local battery-to-battery or display communication from internet monitoring loss.

Red light and an active alarm

Capture the exact alarm immediately. Stop if the condition is recurring or output is affected. Protection may clear after the triggering condition returns to range, but the cause should still be reviewed.

Normal green light but the app is offline

The battery may still be operating locally while cloud data is unavailable. Record the light and check whether the inverter's local display shows current battery data. Do not restart the battery solely to fix an app connection.

When to stop and call the installer

Contact your installer when:

  • The light is steady red, the buzzer sounds or protection returns.
  • Yellow flashing persists or multiple battery units show inconsistent indications.
  • The app shows a battery/BMS alarm, communication loss or a serial number you do not recognise.
  • The LED indicates activity but live SOC does not update.
  • The battery appears normal but the inverter cannot see it.
  • The issue followed a router change, inverter replacement, battery expansion, electrical work, firmware change or prolonged shutdown.
  • There is water entry, impact damage, swelling, unusual heat, smell, hissing, smoke or sparking.

For immediate danger, move away, keep others clear and call the emergency services. Never open or move the battery.

Is flashing green normal?
