Why a Dyness PowerDepot G2 May Stop Charging in Cold Weather
Scope: This guide is for the Dyness PowerDepot G2. It explains the manufacturer's cold-temperature charge protection and the optional heating variant. It does not authorise improvised heating, enclosure changes, electrical measurements, restarts, parameter changes or cover removal. Confirm the exact hardware with your installer.
The direct answer
A standard Dyness PowerDepot G2 is designed to stop charging when the battery temperature falls outside its permitted charging range. The manufacturer manual gives 0°C as the lower charging limit for a unit without the optional heating film. Dyness separately describes automatic self-heating as optional and says a heating-equipped version can support charging down to -20°C.
That means two PowerDepot G2 installations can behave differently on the same cold morning. Do not assume yours has a heater because an online product description mentions it. Record the battery light, monitoring alarm, state of charge, installation conditions and exact model/variant, then let the cabinet return to an acceptable temperature naturally. If charging does not resume, or a red protection light remains, contact the installer.
Why lithium batteries protect charging more strictly in the cold
The PowerDepot G2 contains a battery-management system (BMS) that supervises charging, discharging, current, voltage and temperature. Dyness states that when battery temperature is outside the permitted charge range, temperature protection activates and the device stops charging. Protection releases when temperature returns to the rated range.
This is different from an inverter merely choosing not to charge. The battery may be visible and may even remain capable of discharge while charging is paused, because Dyness publishes a lower temperature limit for discharge than for standard charging. A system that powers loads but will not accept charge on a freezing morning is therefore not automatically a failed battery.
The BMS responds to battery temperature, not just the number shown on a weather app. A nearby room thermometer can help describe conditions, but it does not reveal internal cell temperature. This is why a homeowner should collect evidence rather than override the protection.
Standard unit or heating-equipped variant?
The current PowerDepot G2 manual states:
- Normal charging lower limit: 0°C.
- Charging lower limit with the optional heating film: -20°C.
- Discharging lower limit: -20°C.
- Self-heating is an option, not a feature to assume on every unit.
The Dyness product page also labels automatic self-heating as optional. Your product label, order specification and commissioning record should determine what was actually supplied. The front appearance alone may not be enough.
Ask the installer to confirm:
- Whether the installed PowerDepot G2 has the factory heating option.
- Whether that option is enabled and supported by the installed firmware/configuration.
- Which live battery-temperature or alarm value the system reported.
Do not open the cabinet to look for a heating film. Dyness restricts cabinet access and internal work, and opening it can introduce electrical, warranty and sealing risks.
Safe checks during a cold-weather charge pause
1. Confirm the exact model
Photograph the product label without moving the unit. It should identify PowerDepot G2. Solarboss may use “PowerDepot H5B G2” in the sales-page title, so include the serial number and product ID when asking support to confirm the variant.
Do not use the temperature limits from PowerBox G2, DL5.0C Pro or another Dyness battery. The model and option set matter.
2. Record the front light
Take a short video of the complete LED pattern and any buzzer:
- Green animation can indicate charging or discharging depending on its direction.
- Green flashing at the current SOC indicates standby.
- Yellow flashing indicates a communication problem.
- Steady red indicates protection.
Temperature protection can affect output and be represented by the red protection indication, but red is not temperature-specific. You still need the monitoring alarm or installer data to distinguish cold protection from voltage, current or another condition.
3. Check monitoring without changing anything
Capture battery SOC, status, alarm text/code, reported temperature if available, and the last-update time from the commissioned Dyness or inverter monitoring view. The exact screens vary.
Do not change minimum SOC, charge window, current, voltage or battery type. A scheduled charge window or inverter setting can also explain “not charging”; changing several variables at once destroys the evidence and may conflict with the battery specification.
4. Note real conditions around the installation
Record the date, outside overnight low, approximate temperature near the battery, and whether the space is sheltered, ventilated and dry. Note whether the issue occurs only before dawn, begins after several cold hours, and clears later in the day.
Do not cover ventilation, wrap the cabinet or enclose it more tightly. Dyness installation requirements include environmental and spacing considerations that must not be changed casually.
5. Allow natural recovery
If there are no damage or fire indicators, leave the system undisturbed while ambient conditions improve. Dyness says low-temperature charge protection releases when temperature returns to the rated operating range.
Do not use a portable heater, heat gun, hair dryer, hot-water bottle, heated blanket or other local heat source. Uneven or uncontrolled heating can create a hazard and does not prove the cause. Never pour warm water onto the cabinet or move the battery.
6. Check whether charge resumes and record the time
When the installation warms naturally, check whether the red protection indication clears and whether monitoring shows charge current again. Save before-and-after screenshots with timestamps. If charging resumes consistently only after cold periods, that pattern is valuable evidence for the installer.
If it does not resume, do not begin switch cycling. A communication fault, inverter schedule, reserve SOC, grid condition or another BMS alarm may be involved.
What not to do
- Do not assume the battery is faulty because it pauses below 0°C.
- Do not assume every PowerDepot G2 includes self-heating.
- Do not open the cabinet or look for a heating component.
- Do not improvise external heating or insulation.
- Do not force charging by changing inverter voltage/current values.
- Do not disable temperature protection or install unofficial firmware.
- Do not repeatedly press reset or operate isolators to clear the light.
- Do not rely on an app value whose last update is stale.
These restrictions matter because the protection is part of the battery's safety design. The correct remedy may be as simple as waiting for temperature recovery, but a persistent or unexpected condition needs system-level diagnosis.
Stop and call the installer
Contact your installer if:
- A steady red light or buzzer continues after conditions have warmed.
- Charging repeatedly stops at temperatures that appear to be within the confirmed range for your exact variant.
- The monitoring system shows high-temperature, cell-voltage, over-current, communication or internal BMS alarms rather than low temperature.
- Yellow communication indication appears.
- The battery will neither charge nor discharge.
- The behaviour began after relocation, enclosure work, firmware/settings changes or system expansion.
- Water entry, condensation inside visible areas, impact damage, swelling, unusual heat, smell, hissing, smoke or sparking is present.
For smoke, fire or immediate danger, move away, keep others clear and contact the emergency services. Do not approach or attempt to move the battery.

Provide one evidence pack containing:
- Product-label photo with model, serial and product ID.
- Confirmation from the order/installer record whether factory self-heating is fitted.
- Video of the LED pattern and buzzer.
- Screenshot of SOC, battery status, alarm text/code, last update and reported temperature where available.
- Inverter make and exact model.
- Approximate temperature near the battery and the overnight outdoor low.
- Time charging stopped and, if applicable, the time it resumed.
- Whether discharge still worked during the charge pause.
